In the news article, Brittany Beaver, 14, said, “It was like being in a dryer with shoes and somebody turning it on.”

When the students realized the bus driver was injured they stepped into adult roles. Jonathon Beaver, 15, Cody Long, 15 joined Brittany Beaver and Aaron Huffaker in helping to evacuate the 10 other students off the bus and also the injured bus driver.

Cody Long in the article said “he was talking to his friends when he heard the bus driver say “hold on.” The bus began to roll and he remembers hitting seats, walls and the roof. It seems like it happened so fast but it lasted so long.

Although the scene was chaos, the four students used information learned in emergency evacuation drills to empty the bus. The student’s actions proved to save valuable time for emergency responders when they arrived at the accident scene. The emergency responders were able to immediately start triage upon arrival, quickly and efficiently transporting the ten injured students and bus driver to the Knoxville Hospital.

The Knoxville School Board and Knoxville Fire and Rescue have formally recognized the four students whose actions were instrumental in the emergency response following the school bus accident.

For contributing the ultimate honor of responding in a crisis situation the award for Hero of Valor was presented to Brittany Beaver, Jonathon Beaver, Aaron Huffaker, and Cody Long.
