If there was ever a smile that would light up an ordinary day it was the smile of Leroy Wright. Even in the early hours of May 18, 1988 over coffee and breakfast with fellow drivers Roy would have filled the California truck stop with sunshine.

At 5:04 a.m. a life was saved twenty four years ago today. In saving the life of fellow driver Terry Evans of Marcus, Iowa. In doing so Roy sacrificed his own.

After leaving the restaurant near Gilroy, California Roy and team driver Terry Evans were crossing Pacheco Pass Highway 152 to their rigs. A third driver was not with them as he had stopped off at the restroom.

Another rig was coming down the highway out of control. Roy pushed his friend to safety, saving him, but sacrificed his own life in doing so.

Roy was a fun loving easy going driver who lived to drive the long haul routes throughout the United States. Bumps, ruts and promising “fishing holes” on these roads were always remembered on the many trips he made over them.

Roy entered the Army in 1957 and was a member of the 101st Airborne Division until he was honorably discharged in 1963. He was employed as a truck driver for over 25 years, during which time he drove for Marx Trucking Lines, Independent Wood Products, and Specialized Hauling, all located in Sioux City, Iowa.

At Roy’s memorial service other drivers honored him with a mile long convoy from the church to the cemetery. The love of driving is born in truckers. Roy was influential in his nephew Darrell’s years of driving, as well as his own son Randy and his great nephew Brant who are over the road drivers today. Driving was and is in their blood, the open highway and the big rig keeps on calling them.
